Naan is a Tamil film written and directed by N. Lingusamy in 2012 based on a story by Karthik Subbaraj. The film stars Vijay, Janani Iyer and Andrea Jeremiah in the lead roles. Smitha Michael is the cinematographer while G. V. Prakash Kumar scored music for the film The production began when Lingusamy was informed of a possible leak of his director's copy of "Vaanam" from an unknown source to be distributed on the internet with encodes of non-Tamil languages within it, which would infringe upon his copyright. He immediately sought legal advice, and was advised by the legal counsel to file a complaint with the police within 48 hours. To avoid filing a civil court case, Lingusamy opted for filing an FIR against the unknown owner of the DVD. This resulted in him being raided by the Central Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police, who forced him to hand over all his item numbers and other information about his lead actors. He gave them all the necessary information about the film except its lead lead actress Janani Iyer because she was unavailable at that time. The following day, he filed an FIR at Kala Nagar police station over all three VCDs distributed along with it. He was approached by the Commissioner of Police, who questioned him on the lady in the item number. The film's title, "Naan", translates to "now". Lingusamy stated that one of his intentions for making this film was to examine urban violence caused by resources. He added that he chose to do so through a love story with elements of comedy and music. Lingusamy chose Vijay due to the actor's performance in "Paiyaa" (2010) and Janani Iyer after being impressed with her performance in "Aadukalam" (2011). He completed shooting within partial schedule before Vijay started work on Gautham Menon's project, "Ye Maaya Chesave" (2010). The film was shot primarily in Chennai and Mumbai. "Naan" received mixed reviews. Sify's critic wrote "What's good? — The movie has some comedy parts which are funny. It also has two songs, one romantic one with Vijay and Andrea Jeremiah, which are well shot by cinematographer Smitha. Another good thing is that the director Lingusamy has strayed away from his usual cliched themes." The Hindu's Malathi Rangarajan said, ""Naan" falls somewhere between comedy and romance with an unrealistic touch of action to it." Rediff gave it 2 out of 5 stars and wrote ""Naan" is worth a watch for sure because it's different". "The Times of India" wrote, "N Lingusamy's Naan is a film that does enough things right to make you want to overlook its few flaws".2012 Tamil Nadu Awards 2012 Vijay Awards 2013 Big Star Entertainment Awards 2013 Cinema Express Awards 2013 Cinema Express Face of the Year - Female (Andrea Jeremiah) The soundtrack album was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar and it consists of six songs and one theme music. The lyrics were written by Na. Muthukumar, Mani Amudhavan and Viveka. cfa1e77820
